Memmingen remains a fair trade city: a sign of sustainability!

You can be happy in Memmingen: The city has once again received the title of “Fairtrade City”! As the City of Memmingen reports, the municipality meets all the criteria of the Fairtrade Town campaign and can hold the title for another two years. This award was awarded for the first time in 2021 by Fairtrade Deutschland e.V. and has now been successfully renewed in 2023.

Mayor Jan Rothenbacher is pleased about this positive development and sees it as a sign of the city's sustainability efforts. The motto: “Think globally, act locally” is reflected not only in the city’s efforts, but also in the concrete measures that are being implemented in Memmingen. These include, among other things, recurring Fair Week campaigns and the use of Fairtrade products such as coffee and chocolate. The younger generation is also being considered: Fairtrade sports balls are provided to help students learn about the topic of Fairtrade in a playful way.

Part of a global network

The city of Memmingen is part of an impressive global network that includes over 2,000 cities in 36 countries. There are now over 820 Fairtrade towns in Germany that are committed to a fairer trading structure. The Fairtrade system aims to improve the conditions for farmers and workers so that they are able to work under fair and just conditions. “Fairtrade” not only stands for environmental protection, but also for social justice and economic sustainability.

As the Fairtrade organization explains, this movement has existed for over thirty years and has set itself the goal of sustainably changing trading practices. It's about protecting the rights of farmers and workers and ensuring that they too can make a living from their products. Fairtrade acts as a bridge between production sites and consumers and thus promotes awareness of the origin and conditions under which our products are manufactured.

So in Memmingen they have a good hand when it comes to a sustainable future. The city's recognized Fairtrade activities not only help strengthen the local market, but also support the implementation of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. An example that can serve as a model for many other cities!
