On Friday evening, November 15, 2025, the German U21 national team impressed with an impressive 5-0 win against Malta in the European Championship qualification for the 2027 finals. The game took place in Fürth and was intended to mark an unforgettable evening for a very specific talent: Lennart Karl, who, only 17 years old and a player for FC Bayern Munich, made his debut in the U21.
U21 national coach Antonio Di Salvo had great confidence in the young striker from the start and called him into the starting line-up. Karl thanked us for the trust with two goals. In the 37th minute he made it 2-0 in front of around 5,000 spectators in the stadium, making him the second youngest goalscorer in the history of the DFB, only behind Youssoufa Moukoko. His second goal in the 67th minute made the final score 5-0. He has joined an illustrious list of talents who made their debut in the U21 before coming of age, including Julian Draxler and Florian Wirtz.

Karl's nomination was one of two decisions made by the DFB to bring a breath of fresh air into the young team. Arijon Ibrahimovic from 1. FC Heidenheim was also new to the squad.
