Lennart Karl impresses on his U21 debut – Bayern talent on the rise!
On Friday evening, November 15, 2025, the German U21 national team impressed with an impressive 5-0 win against Malta in the European Championship qualification for the 2027 finals. The game took place in Fürth and was intended to mark an unforgettable evening for a very specific talent: Lennart Karl, who, only 17 years old and a player for FC Bayern Munich, made his debut in the U21.
U21 national coach Antonio Di Salvo had great confidence in the young striker from the start and called him into the starting line-up. Karl thanked us for the trust with two goals. In the 37th minute he made it 2-0 in front of around 5,000 spectators in the stadium, making him the second youngest goalscorer in the history of the DFB, only behind Youssoufa Moukoko. His second goal in the 67th minute made the final score 5-0. He has joined an illustrious list of talents who made their debut in the U21 before coming of age, including Julian Draxler and Florian Wirtz.
A special talent with a great future
Karl's nomination was one of two decisions made by the DFB to bring a breath of fresh air into the young team. Arijon Ibrahimovic from 1. FC Heidenheim was also new to the squad. On the other hand, some well-known names are missing, including Said El Mala (1. FC Köln), who was unable to play due to his call-up to the senior national team, and the injured Youssoufa Moukoko from Copenhagen.
With his performances so far, Karl has attracted attention in the U17 national team, where he scored 7 goals and 6 assists in 13 games. His appearances in the Bundesliga and the Champions League for Bayern Munich have also cemented his status as a great talent. Bayern Munich's sporting director Christoph Freund was optimistic and praised Karl's development and his nomination for the U21.
A look at the next challenges
The U21s are under pressure to secure qualification for the 2027 European Championships in Serbia and Albania. The next games are just around the corner: next Tuesday the team will travel against Georgia, followed by an endurance test. The return of injured defensive players should also contribute to stability, which could be crucial for the upcoming matches.
How will Lennart Karl, who won the hearts of fans with his remarkable debut, fare as the qualification progresses? The football world is watching him and his teammates with fascination. And the hope for another win against Georgia remains high.
