Dangerous heat wave is rolling towards Bavaria – temperatures up to 35 degrees!

High temperatures are upon us: In Bavaria, the weather forecast is characterized by a hot interlude. Meteorologists from the German Weather Service (DWD) are predicting an increase in temperature in the coming days, which could reach up to 35 degrees. This particularly applies to Saturday, where locally warm regions such as Kitzingen, Aschaffenburg and Würzburg will work up a sweat. Thursday will initially start off cool, but then hot air will move in from the southwest, causing the thermometers to rise sharply. Highs of 28 degrees in the west and 22 degrees in the east of Bavaria are expected on Thursday. A clear temperature increase is expected on Friday with up to 32 degrees before it gets really hot on Saturday.

The DWD warns of health risks that can be associated with the high heat. Sunstroke and sunburn are not uncommon. Precautionary measures are essential, especially on Saturday when the UV index is at a high level of 9 out of 11. The weather service recommends applying sunscreen, wearing a hat and drinking plenty of water to get through this heat wave.

Increase in hot days in Bavaria

The phenomenon of heat waves is increasing in Bavaria. In fact, the number of hot days has more than tripled between 2011 and 2020 compared to the 1950s. The trend is pointing steeply upwards. An official measure of a heat wave is several days in a row with temperatures above 28 °C. There is still no uniform international definition for the word “heat wave”. However, the German Weather Service defines them clearly and also offers a free newsletter for heat warnings, which provides specific information at district level. Older people and city dwellers in particular are informed separately when warnings are issued.

The first warnings for severe heat stress are issued when at least two days with a felt temperature above 32 ° C are forecast and the night-time cooling is low. In cases of extreme heat stress, where the perceived temperature rises above 38 °C in the early afternoon, special measures are required. For this purpose, the calculation of the perceived temperature takes into account not only the humidity, but also radiation and wind.

So be prepared, because the weather in Bavaria ensures wonderful summer experiences - but also challenges that no one should underestimate. You can find more information about heat prevention from the Bavarian Ministry of Health at StMG.
