Wolfstein Castle closes for winter break – new exhibition is coming!

The cold months are just around the corner, and that cannot be overlooked in Freyung either. On Monday, November 10, 2025, the magnificent Wolfstein Castle will close for a short winter break. Visitors must be patient until the reopening on Friday, December 26, 2025. But don't worry, the time until then will be exciting, because the museums in the area have something very special to offer.

The Jagd Land Fluss Museum and the Wolfstein Gallery will remain closed until Thursday, December 25, 2025. On December 26th, the castle will open its gates again and invites its guests from Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. One more reason to plan a visit during the Christmas season! A new special exhibition entitled “Forest Stories” is being presented in the Wolfstein Gallery.

A look at the “Forest Stories” exhibition

This exhibition is more than just a collection of works of art: it shows the perspectives of regional artists and addresses the forest as a habitat, cultural space and source of inspiration. It will be exciting to see how art reinterprets the image of the forest. The opening of the exhibition will take place on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the Wolfstein Gallery. Anyone interested can register by email at museum@landkreis-frg.de or by phone at 08551 57-1611.

During the winter break you also have the opportunity to find out more about the intact nature around Freyung. The Bavarian Forest Nature Park and its four large protected areas - Bavarian Forest National Park, Šumava National Park, Bavarian Forest Nature Park and the Bohemian Forest Protected Landscape Area - are in the starting blocks for a new season of nature experiences. These areas are known not only for their breathtaking scenery, but also for their tireless efforts to protect and restore natural systems.

A region in harmony with nature

The Šumava National Park places a special focus on the protection of natural systems. This is done through targeted measures that preserve and promote the ecosystem. In combination with the Bavarian Forest Nature Park, which is located between the Danube lowlands and the Great Arber, the valuable natural and cultural landscape continues to be maintained and valued. Visitors can therefore look forward to a variety of opportunities to explore and enjoy the beauty of nature.

A stay in the region not only offers cultural experiences, but also the opportunity to discover the impressive natural features. Whether on hikes or visiting the protected areas – the area around Freyung has something to offer for every age group. Anyone who bridges the winter break at Wolfstein Castle can simultaneously connect with the beauty of the forest and unwind for a bit.
