The Grafenau Folk Festival, a popular attraction for guests from the area, produced a mixed assessment for the police last weekend. Several operations have given the officers a lot to do. As the PNP reported, there were various incidents during this festival weekend that deserve close attention.
A particularly unpleasant incident occurred when a 47-year-old woman was slightly injured by a security guard and filed a report. On the night from Friday to Saturday, the security forces themselves once again had to deal with a number of drunk festival-goers who were not only loud and insulting, but also acted directly against the police. A total of six criminal complaints were filed for insults and bodily harm.
Evictions and drug use
The police concluded that three aggressive and drunken people were expelled from the festival grounds. Above all, the tone among the festival visitors repeatedly caused trouble over the course of the weekend. On the other hand, drug consumption is another problem that cannot be ignored at the festival site. On Sunday, a 50-year-old man was caught red-handed while consuming marijuana and was also reported.
It seems as if the events in Grafenau are not an isolated case. There are currently reports of similar incidents across the country, raising concerns about safety at major events. For example, on July 3, 2025, there was an alarming incident in Kösching, Eichstätt district, in which a 22-year-old woman suffered a needle-like stab wound. The woman complained of a headache and had to be taken to hospital by emergency services after it remained unclear whether it was an injection with a syringe or not. The BNN points out that investigations are in full swing as the police have found no evidence of an actual injection.
Concern about “needle spiking”
The phenomenon of so-called “needle spiking” has gained international attention in recent months. These involve secret injections of unknown substances, often in busy locations, that specifically affect women. Symptoms after such attacks can include dizziness, paralysis or even memory lapses. While experts question the likelihood of an undetected injection, reports of incidents similar to those in France, where 145 women reported such attacks after an event, are alarming.
The police therefore call on you to be vigilant and to report immediately if you see anything suspicious. The concern that the security situation could spoil the fun at the folk festival is justified and is taken seriously by both the organizers and the authorities. The next few days will show how the challenges in the security situation can be met.
