Freising celebrates 50 years of St. Martin's Procession: A festival for young and old!

The big anniversary is just around the corner! On Sunday, November 9th, 2025, the St. Martin's Day procession in Freising will be celebrated for the 50th time. After the festive event had to be canceled for two years due to the corona pandemic, everyone involved is now looking forward to numerous announcements at the annual event. The first St. Martin's Day parade took place in 1974 under the organization of Josef Goerge and his later wife Claudia. What started as a small celebration developed into one of the largest and most beautiful traditions in Bavaria Mercury reports.

The anniversary should now be celebrated in style with a glittering celebration for the whole family. Children and parents are invited to gather at Marienplatz from 5:30 p.m. to follow the procession through the old town with homemade lanterns. At 6:00 p.m. Saint Martin himself, portrayed by Veronika Goldbach on her horse Victor, will lead the procession. The lantern parade leads to the Domberg, where the church blessing is finally given by Auxiliary Bishop Wolfgang Bischof and Pastor Christa Stegschuster the city of Freising reports.

A celebration of traditions and charity

The St. Martin's Procession relies on tried and tested traditions. At the end of the procession, each child receives a “Semoser-Weckerl” baked by local bakeries. This treat is not just for enjoyment, but also for a good cause. The proceeds from the sale of the alarm clocks go to support the “Freisinger Tafel”, which collects donations from the altar boys during the event. The musical accompaniment is provided by the Freising city band, the youth brass orchestra of the music school, the Lerchenfelder brass band and the Freisinger Tanzlmusi. The St. Lantpert children's choir and students from the music school make the evening festive with their songs, as the city administration emphasizes in its information.

The idea of the St. Martin's Procession goes back to Josef Goerges' brother's seminar paper on Saint Martin. It was Claudia Goerge who wanted this St. Martin's parade to be accessible to everyone and not just serve as a replacement for smaller kindergarten parades. Therefore, the first procession was organized in the inner courtyard of the Domberg and far exceeded expectations in terms of the number of participants. From the following year onwards, the fire brigade and BRK ensured the safety of the train, which was already better organized in the same year.

An ecumenical celebration for everyone

The St. Martin's Day parade is more than just an event; it is considered an ecumenical festival of charity that brings families and children together. The organization of the procession is supported by the Freising Music School, which has been cooperating with the Stadtheimatpflege e.V. association since 2015. Mayor Tobias Eschenbacher also took over the patronage of the anniversary. The big event promises to be an unforgettable experience for all participants, especially in this festive atmosphere that Freising's old town offers with its special charm.

What is certain is that the 50th St. Martin's Procession on November 9, 2025 will once again bring the spirit of community and humanity to life and carry on the tradition in Freising - a celebration that will certainly inspire the next generations.
