The hornets in portrait
The hornet (Vespa Crabro) is the largest social wasp type in Germany and can be up to 4 centimeters long. A good story is associated with the adventures of their hired queens, who from mid -May, nests in hollow trees or rarely also in the earth. These nests can grow up to 60 cm tall and house hundreds of animals until late summer. The hornets themselves are peaceful, eat nectar, fruit and sweet tree juices and feed their larvae with captured insects. Most hornets die in late autumn, only hibernate young females and have prepared everything for next year.
protection and regulations
The protection of the hornets is regulated by the Federal Agency Act, which prohibits disruptions, harassment or even killing of these insects. This also applies to their nesting facilities, which may not be damaged or destroyed, unless there is an exemption. As the Nürnberger Environmental Office , a hornet representative must assess the situation on site in such cases. If a distance is necessary, this should be done by a commissioned pest control.
It should be emphasized that the relocation of a hornet's nest is free, while approval for removal costs an administrative fee of 50 euros. Nowadays, the application can be easily made online via "Mein Nuremberg", which significantly simplifies the process for everyone involved.
Overall, the commitment of the BUND nature conservation shows how important a harmonious coexistence is between humans and nature. The respectful handling of these fascinating insects is not only essential for biodiversity, but also enriches life in our gardens.
