12 kilometers of traffic jam on the A3: Crash after failed overtaking maneuvers!

On Friday afternoon, June 13, 2025, there was a terrible traffic accident on the A3 in the direction of Würzburg, which resulted in an enormous traffic jam of around 12 kilometers. Around 1:15 p.m. the incident occurred between the Nuremberg-Nord and the “Weißer Graben” parking lot, such as the news platform Infranken reported.

was a 50-year-old driver from the Fürth district and a 60-year-old man from the Starnberg district. The younger driver wanted to switch on the left lane without noticing the other driver's rapidly approaching vehicle. Despite an attempted alternative and braking maneuver, there was a serious collision.

collision with other vehicles

After the impact, the car of the 60-year-old became uncontrollable and raced across all three lanes. It first hit the side against a 59-year-old driver from Romania. The vehicle then crashed head-on into a small van tamper, which held on the side strip due to a tire breakdown. The trailer overturned.

The 50-year-old came to a standstill with his vehicle about 300 meters beforehand on the middle of the middle. Fortunately, both drivers only suffered slight to moderate injuries in this dramatic incident and were immediately brought to nearby hospitals.

traffic chaos on the motorway

The A3 had to be completely blocked for a period of about an hour to enable the accident recording and landing a rescue helicopter. Due to the rescue work and the subsequent road cleaning, the left lane was also not accessible for the next three hours. The consequences of the accident quickly became noticeable and led to a long traffic jam of around 12 kilometers.

The property damage amounts to an estimated 100,000 euros. On the oncoming lane, too, some vehicles were damaged by flying debris, which still exacerbated the situation. The A3 is not only considered one of the most important motorways in Germany, but also as the second longest that leads from the Dutch border to Austria. Daily serious accidents on this section of the route are not uncommon, such as Tag24 reported.

The evaluation and analysis of such traffic accidents is of great importance for traffic safety. Statistics that are provided by Destatis , help to identify and derive the necessary measures in legislation and infrastructure planning. It remains to be hoped that such accidents will occur less frequently in the future to increase safety on the streets.
