Women's Union Ebersberg celebrates 40 years: Together for equality!

There is a celebration in Ebersberg! The Women's Union celebrates its 40th anniversary on July 20th with a summer festival at the picturesque Klostersee. Irmtraud Anhalt, the founder of the Women's Union in Ebersberg, proudly looks back on four decades of committed and successful women's politics. Her vision of creating a network for women in 1985 was particularly prioritized at a time when the CSU was not exactly known for its women's policy ambitions. Only one in six names on the party list were female, which prompted Anhalt to take action.

“There is something going on,” says Anhalt, who mobilized women in an appeal in the newspaper. The local association was founded with ten committed women, even if the search for fellow campaigners was anything but easy at the beginning. Many women were very busy with their families and careers, which made political engagement difficult. Supported by Mayor Hans Vollhardt and Walter Brilmayer, the Ebersberg Women's Union was finally able to reach some important milestones. Among other things, lunchtime care was established in schools and an equal opportunities office was created.

Successes that make history

The Women's Union not only organized a weekly consultation hour in the town hall, but also launched numerous events such as toy fairs and playground festivals. It is particularly important to the committed group to address domestic violence, which gained attention by co-initiating a women's emergency hotline in Ebersberg. “Women have to become active to bring about change,” emphasizes Anhalt and emphasizes that political participation is essential.

Today, however, women still face challenges. Despite legal equality, they are often disadvantaged professionally and socially, as the Women's Union explains on its website. In particular, family-related obligations prevent many people from becoming politically active. Anhalt would like to see a 50/50 ratio in political committees in order to adequately represent the views and goals of women in all areas of life. “Politics should not be determined by men alone,” the Women’s Union is certain. The highest number of women in political decision-making bodies has currently been reached, but there is still a lot to be done.

A look forward

The commitment within the Women's Union remains unbroken. The members continue to work to make it easier for more women to get involved and to represent their interests at various political levels - be it at federal, state, district or local level. Women should recognize and support the importance of family work and volunteer work in society in order to further promote equality.

Ongoing exchange and participation in important political issues remain crucial. Even if the path to get there is challenging, the goal is clear: women should not only participate equally but actively in political decision-making. “We make this our task,” emphasizes the Women’s Union, which wants to start the next 40 years with fresh courage.
