Nördlingen relies on climate-neutral heat supply for tenants!

In Nördlingen, the course for a sustainable and future-proof heat supply is becoming more and more concrete. The extensive insulation measures in recent years have not only reduced energy consumption, but also enabled a significant step towards climate-friendly heating technology. The housing company of the city of Nördlingen is planning to build a local heating supply for several residential complexes in the middle field in order to guarantee an almost climate-neutral heating and hot water supply for a total of 45 apartments. How Donau-Ries Current reports, the budget plans for 2025 and 2026 already contain the necessary funds to advance this ambitious plan.

The projects mentioned fit into the overarching sustainability goals at federal and state levels. These goals include, among other things, a climate-neutral provision of heat by 2045. Dr. Karin Jahn and Karen Janßen from Fraunhofer IFAM emphasize that the energy industry, municipalities and the housing industry must work hand in hand to overcome the challenges in this area. Various supply options and their cost-effectiveness must be carefully examined. It is obvious that strategic planning for heat supply will be relevant not only for the next few years, but also for the next 30 to 50 years Fraunhofer IFAM turns out.

The challenge of the heat transition

The urgency of the issue is also reflected in the numbers: the operation of buildings in Germany causes around 35 percent of final energy consumption and around 30 percent of CO₂ emissions. This makes a sustainable, greenhouse gas-neutral heat supply a priority in climate protection. The Federal Environment Agency points out that energy-saving renovations such as thermal insulation and efficient heating systems will play a central role in achieving climate goals. Innovative processes such as serial renovation could also enable rapid conversion to zero-energy buildings.

Despite the renovation measures that have already been implemented, municipalities are facing major challenges, especially in old buildings. Many existing buildings still need to be optimized in order to achieve the set climate goals. The political framework must be designed in such a way that climate-friendly behavior actually succeeds and social aspects are taken into account - especially for low-income households that rely on renewable energies.

Together into the future

The Nördlinger concepts show how concrete measures can be initiated through strategic cooperation between specialist staff in municipal utilities and housing companies. The importance of new buildings as passive or energy-plus houses is also emphasized in order to meet the requirements of the future. The challenges are great, but a look at the opportunities and potential that lie in the use of renewable energies and waste heat potential gives cause for confidence.

It remains to be hoped that the projects in Nördlingen can serve as an example for other cities to implement climate-neutral goals not only on paper, but also in reality.
