Fatal swimming accidents in Bavaria: Alarming numbers and tragedies
A weekend of mourning in Bavaria: There were two tragic swimming accidents in Swabia that have a lasting impact on the minds of everyone affected. On Saturday, a 23-year-old jumped from a diving platform into a lake in Gundelfingen an der Donau (Dillingen district), but the pleasure quickly turned into misfortune. As the BR reported, the young man got into trouble. A 22-year-old who tried to help him also found himself in the same predicament. Three other bathers were able to bring the 22-year-old ashore, but any help came too late for the 23-year-old. He was pulled out of the water by the water rescue service and immediately taken to the hospital, but every measure to save his life failed.
The investigations by the Dillingen criminal police are ongoing to clarify the exact background to this accident. A quick look at the statistics shows that the fund for such tragic incidents is high: in Germany, at least 253 people drowned in 2024, which is 35 more than in the same period last year, according to the ZDF reports. In particular, old people and those with previous illnesses are often affected in these cases, as almost one in three fatalities was over 71 years old.
Fatal accident in Rückholz
The second swimming accident occurred in Rückholz (Ostallgäu district), where an 84-year-old also drowned while swimming with her daughter. Rescue workers quickly arrived on the scene to attempt resuscitation, but here too all help was in vain. The circumstances surrounding this incident are also being investigated by the responsible criminal police.
The last few weeks in Bavaria have already attracted public attention due to a series of fatal swimming accidents. The lifeguards and water rescue workers had to intervene again and again, especially during the Pentecost holidays. Over the weekends, several people drowned in different bodies of water. A 79-year-old who sank in Lake Staffelsee on Sunday is still missing, while before that a 32-year-old and a 23-year-old lost their lives in Lake Starnberg.
In recent years, the DLRG has repeatedly pointed out the dangers of swimming in unguarded waters. Ute Vogt, President of the DLRG, advises avoiding swimming in rivers, as dangers such as currents and cold water are not always immediately apparent. Safety instructions are crucial: life jackets should be worn, cold water should be entered with caution and the consumption of alcohol and drugs has no place when swimming.
With temperatures rising and midsummer approaching, it is now up to visitors and residents to be smart and aware of the dangers that the water poses. Stay safe and enjoy the swimming season!
