BBC Bayreuth struggles after a weak start, loses against Hagen!
In the last game of the 5th matchday of the BARMER 2nd Basketball Bundesliga ProA, BBC Bayreuth suffered another defeat. Against Phoenix Hagen, the team led by coach Florian Wedell achieved a final score of 74:88 (halftime: 33:53) and is now in second-to-last place in the table with a score of 2:8 points. Although Bayreuth improved significantly in the second half, it wasn't enough to win.
Bayreuth didn't get off to a good start to the game. Hagen stepped on the accelerator right from the start and quickly took an 8-0 lead. Bayreuth initially found it difficult to get into the game and was already 2:10 behind at an early timeout. The first half ended disastrously for the guests, who went into the locker room with a score of 33:53. In this phase there was a clear inferiority, especially in terms of rebounds, where Hagen dominated with 29 to 15.
Turnaround for the second half
The second half started much brighter for the BBC. Bayreuth showed morale and started with a 12:4 run. In the third quarter the team was finally able to score 20:17 and reduced the deficit to 66:75 in the final period. Despite a strong comeback and an accurate three-point rate of 38%, late long-range goals from Hagen were the deciding factor. Eventually Hagen pulled ahead to 88:74, which once again put Bayreuth in an unfavorable starting position.
The top scorers for Bayreuth were Rayshawn Mart (18 points), followed by Nat Diallo, who contributed 13 points and 7 rebounds, and Moritz Plescher with 12 points. Coach Wedell praised his players' reaction in the second half, but criticized the first half as too weak. Plescher also knew about the crucial errors and noted that the team urgently needed to work on the starting performance.
Outlook for the next challenges
The coming week will be crucial for BBC Bayreuth, as the next home game against the PS Karlsruhe Lions is on the program on November 1st. Coach Wedell and his boys have the chance to improve the record from 2:8 points in the next four home games. The question of whether they will get off to a better start this time remains to be seen.
The course of the season will remain exciting and it remains to be seen whether Bayreuth can free itself from the current crisis. As the game against Hagen shows, the players have the potential to improve if they master the initial phase better.
