Bridge demolition near Strullendorf: complete closure to traffic until December!

A lot has happened in the Bamberg district in the last few days - in the truest sense of the word. On November 30, 2025, the bridge on the B22 over the B505 near Strullendorf, which had been closed since May 2025 due to serious damage, was demolished. Further operation was no longer possible, so the decision to demolish it finally became unavoidable. The demolition work, which began on November 28th, 2025 and ended until the early hours of November 29th, 2025 on the clean-up night of dismantling, resulted in a comprehensive full closure of the B505.

The construction site was worked on by the Max Wild company with seven massive excavators, the weight of which varied between 40 and 75 tons. In total, around 1,800 cubic meters of building material was moved, without any remains of the bridge being visible the following sunrise. Max Fus, senior construction manager for the project, explained the challenges of the demolition process and emphasized that everything went according to plan. Despite the complexity of the demolition, there have been no incidents and the site remains closed to pedestrians and vehicles.

Traffic disruptions and diversions

The full closure of the B505 caused massive traffic disruptions that have plagued motorists for months. The diversions are particularly important for those coming from the south. You have to use the B505 via Hirschaid, the St2260 and the A73 to Bamberg-Ost. For vehicles arriving from the north via the A73, it is not possible to exit onto the B505; a diversion via Hirschaid is required here. However, the exits to the B505 in the south from Bamberg and those from Strullendorf to the B505 in the direction of A73 remain passable.

New infrastructure project in planning

In view of the outdated bridge and the increasing demands on the traffic infrastructure, the planned temporary ramp with a left-turn lane to the state road to Strullendorf is a step in the right direction. This ramp is scheduled to be completed by spring 2026 and could significantly improve the traffic situation at the B22/B505 junction. In Germany, the transport infrastructure includes around 40,300 bridges, many of them from the boom years between 1960 and 1985, which now need to be comprehensively modernized in order to meet today's requirements. This is also part of a nationwide bridge modernization program aimed at increasing the load-bearing capacity and safety of bridges and supporting large-capacity and heavy-duty transport.

The state building authority has also warned of the dangers posed by falling concrete parts during demolition work and has ordered an absolute ban on stopping in the construction site area.

It remains to be seen how the traffic management and infrastructure in the Strullendorf area will develop in the future. The work on the new structure could have a lasting impact on the face of this important traffic artery.
