Cashier in Augsburg brutally beaten while attempting to steal!

An incident occurred in Augsburg on July 5, 2025 that heated up emotions. At around 9 a.m., an unknown man tried to slip past the checkout unnoticed in the supermarket on Prinzstrasse without paying for his groceries. The perpetrator, a sporty man about 180 cm tall with a noticeable Russian dialect, was wearing a black T-shirt, light-colored shorts and a red cap. Despite his rather inconspicuous appearance, the thief and an accomplice left the market without paying.

But that wasn't the end of the story. An attentive cashier was not intimidated by the brazen behavior. He confronted the perpetrator, which quickly escalated the situation. There was a confrontation in the parking lot: the cashier held the perpetrator's bag, which probably contained the stolen goods. Suddenly the perpetrator struck and insulted his adversary before both refugees fled without loot. The police have now started investigations and are examining allegations of robbery and insults. Witnesses are asked to contact the Augsburg Süd police station on 0821/323-2710.

Legal aspects of theft

As the Criminal Law-Bundesweit website explains, a distinction is made between different phases of theft: from the unpunished preparatory act through the attempt to the completion and termination of the theft. The classification as an attempt or as a completed theft can be decisive and have an impact on the sentence. A theft is complete when the shopkeeper no longer has access to the goods, which means that carrying away goods in bags is not considered complete theft because the so-called custody enclave does not exist. The distinction between attempt and completion is often complicated and has legal consequences.

The increasing numbers of shoplifting

In Germany, the numbers for shoplifting have increased significantly since the pandemic. According to an analysis by Deutschlandfunk, there were a total of around 426,000 advertisements in 2023, the highest number since 2006. The reasons for this increase are varied and range from inflation and falling purchasing power to an increase in professional gangs of thieves. Retail suffers greatly from these developments, which not only benefit the tax authorities, but also customers - because the costs of theft prevention are often factored into the pricing of goods. In 2023 alone, €1.55 billion was spent on security measures against theft, with many stores increasingly relying on technologies such as surveillance cameras and security tags.

Theft methods often vary, ranging from opportunistic thieves who steal out of financial necessity to professional gangs who use sophisticated methods. All of this shows that the issue of shoplifting is of great importance not only locally, but also on a national level.
