Decathlon conquers Nuremberg: Two new branches in the city!
Good news for all sports enthusiasts in Nuremberg! The French sporting goods retailer Decathlon is planning to open two new branches in the metropolitan region. The first will open at the end of 2025 in the Wöhrl department store on Ludwigsplatz, the second in spring 2026 in the Franken-Center Nürnberg, a popular shopping center in the Langwasser district.
With the new branch in Wöhrl, the Nuremberg residents will have a sales area of around 2,900 square meters, which offers a wide range of sports and leisure items. The Wöhrl House will be upgraded to a total of 30,000 square meters of retail space. The “U-one” department will be eliminated and integrated into the women’s and men’s departments. The CEO of Wöhrl,Thomas Weckerlein, sees Decathlon as an important addition to the offering and is confident that the high footfall in the pedestrian zone will lead to a positive development.
Expansion despite challenges
– For Decathlon, the new locations in Nuremberg are part of a large-scale expansion plan that envisages over 60 new openings in Germany by 2027. Decathlon currently has 13 branches in Bavaria, and while the economy is facing challenges in brick-and-mortar retail such as falling sales, Decathlon is making optimistic progress. Thomas Weckerlein emphasizes that Nuremberg, with over 500,000 inhabitants and a high sporting affinity, plays a central role in Bavaria.
The company plans to invest up to 100 million euros in new openings and modernizations in Germany, which could also result in the creation of several thousand new jobs. Decathlon's goal is for customers to be able to reach a branch within a maximum of 20 minutes. Therefore, a larger area of around 3,060 square meters in the basement of the Franken Center is being rented.
Strong competition in the sports retail sector
The expansion is no coincidence. The sports retailer in Germany achieved sales of around 3.5 billion euros last year, and many retailers are fighting against the negative development in retail. Competitors such as Intersport are planning at least 100 new stores by 2030, making for an exciting and challenging time in sports retail.
With the opening of the new branches Decathlon a sign that even in times of vacancies in city centers and other challenges, there are opportunities to expand the retail offering and delight customers. The city of Nuremberg and its citizens can look forward to a more diverse shopping experience in the area of sports and leisure!
