Protest in Aschaffenburg: ICE stop at 7:05 a.m. will be canceled!

In Aschaffenburg, a decision by Deutsche Bahn is causing excitement and protests among commuters. From mid-December 2023, the popular ICE 1022 will no longer stop in Aschaffenburg at 7:05 a.m. Instead, the express train will stop in Hanau in the future. This change is aimed at making driving more stable, but many users are upset about the loss of the early morning stop that allowed them to get to Frankfurt in time for 8 a.m. It is estimated that the trains will take around 30 minutes to travel from Aschaffenburg to Frankfurt, meaning some commuters will now have to travel significantly longer to reach their workplaces.

The reactions to this decision are violent. Aschaffenburg's mayor Jürgen Herzing (SPD) described the loss of the stop as "fatal" and called on Deutsche Bahn to reconsider the decision. He is optimistic that the widespread protest could persuade the railway to reintroduce the stop in the 2024 summer timetable. District boss Alexander Legler (CSU) has also spoken out in favor of a review, as many commuters consider the 7:05 a.m. stop to be essential.

Protest and importance for commuters

Numerous commuters have already spoken out and expressed their dissatisfaction with the cancellation. Statistics show that around 3,800 people commute from the Bavarian Lower Main to Frankfurt every day, including 608 on long-distance transport between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. The Aschaffenburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry also pointed out the importance of the ICE stop for the region's economy in a statement. Many companies could be dependent on commuters who rely on efficient connections.

The decision could also lead to the remaining services around the ICE being overloaded at 7:33 a.m. It remains exciting to see what steps Deutsche Bahn will take in response to the protests. Bundestag member Andrea Lindholz (CSU) has already initiated a discussion with the railways and the Federal Ministry of Transport to examine the return of the stop in the summer timetable.

Future of rail operations

A spokeswoman for Deutsche Bahn has explained that the 2026 timetable aims to standardize the most important ICE lines in order to make rail operations more stable. Still, for many commuters it remains unclear whether these plans can continue to address their needs for efficient connections.

While the discussion about the deletion of the stop in Aschaffenburg is causing a stir, Deutsche Bahn's plans are also taking other aspects into account. Commuters who rely on quick connections are hoping for a positive turnaround in the coming summer timetable.
