Landsberg X-Press: After a disastrous game, the president was not amused at all!

The football season in Bavaria continues to be anything but pleasant for the Landsberg X-Press. In the last first round game of the regional league, the team suffered an unfortunate 24:31 defeat against a direct competitor, the Franken Knights. This setback is particularly painful as the Knights were at the bottom of the table until recently. The Landsberg team's performance was described by President Markus Gruberbauer as "pissing", which reflects the mood in the X-Men camp.

The team's inconsistent style of play was again evident. In the early stages of the game, the Landsberg X-Press was already behind and could not withstand the pressure from the Knights. Gruberbauer expressed his disappointment with the entire performance and noted that this type of football was “weakening of the habit.” A Landsberger player had to accept a penalty during the game, which further exacerbated the chaotic situation.

Strong opponent and own weaknesses

In the season opener on May 11, 2024, the X-Men met the Franken Knights in the sports center, where around 980 spectators were present. At this point they clearly had to admit defeat by 14:35. Head coach Gabriel Chambers noted after the game that the team was not playing as a collective, which turned out to be one of their biggest shortcomings. The club is currently going through a period of change: 17 players left the club after last season, which is why the team lacks the necessary experience. This was clearly visible in the game against the Knights.

The Knights, on the other hand, were able to rely on a well-positioned team that looked strong through new additions and the retention of top performers. Quarterback Jarrett Zibert in particular played a key role and put his teammates in the spotlight excellently. Landsberg was able to shine as a fighter, but failed to reduce the error rate, which, according to Gruberbauer, contributed significantly to the eventual failure.

Outlook and hopes

Despite the current defeats, the team remains optimistic and sees the last few games as an opportunity to improve. The fighting spirit is unbroken: touchdowns by Hannes Haug and Bryant Hayes prove the potential that the players have. It will be interesting to see how the team performs in the second leg against the Knights on May 26th.

While the men's team is struggling, there are also bright spots among the Landsberg X-Press youth teams. The U16 won convincingly against the Starnberg Argonauts (40:12) and the Augsburg Raptors (34:19) at a tournament in Augsburg. The U19 team with the Allgäu Comets, however, had no luck at the weekend and lost 0:21 to the Nürnberg Rams.

Overall, it remains to be seen whether the Landsberg X-Press can turn the corner. A look at the next games could show whether the club can learn from its difficulties and turn things around to celebrate some success this season. The fans and those responsible hope that the team will flourish soon and can look forward to the upcoming games.
