Dementia weeks in Amberg: Culture and knowledge for those affected from September 19th.

The city of Amberg and the Amberg-Sulzbach district are starting this year with a very special event: Dementia Weeks from September 19th to October 27th, 2025. Under the motto “Hold on to what connects” the organizers want to raise awareness of dementia and offer support for those affected and their families. A total of 26 events are on the program, covering a wide spectrum.

The Dementia Weeks kick off on September 19th at 10:30 a.m. with a colorful flash mob on the market square in Amberg. The event is organized by the Health Region Plus Amberg/Amberg-Sulzbach network, which has numerous partners on board such as the AOVE “Growing Old at Home” coordination center, the Bavarian State Office for Nursing, and many other local actors.

Opening and central events

Today, September 15th, the official opening of the Bavarian Dementia Weeks took place in the city laboratory at Bahnhofstraße 8, Amberg. The offers were presented by regional specialist offices at 9 a.m. sharp. A highlight of the opening day is the presentation of the strategy paper “Good care. At home in Bavaria.” at 2 p.m. in the large town hall, followed by a town hall discussion at 3 p.m. Here, caring relatives have the opportunity to contribute their voices to a dialogue with regional actors from politics and society.

The program during the Dementia Weeks is varied and ranges from information events about dementia prevention, diagnosis and care to cultural activities such as guided tours, excursions and an art exhibition. Particularly noteworthy is the concert reading on September 23rd with the artist Sarah Straub, who deals with the topic of dementia in a creative way. The importance of physical and mental health in coping with dementia is also emphasized here, especially through various sports and health offerings.

Goals of the dementia weeks

Dementia weeks offer the opportunity to create more openness and support when dealing with dementia. The event is an important step to better inform relatives and raise awareness in the community. The various formats - be it specialist lectures or creative activities - promote exchange between those affected, relatives and experts so that everyone can take part in the diverse offerings.

With a well-thought-out concept and numerous partners behind us, the Dementia Weeks are about to be successfully implemented. Amberg and the Amberg-Sulzbach district are sending a strong signal for greater understanding in society. Everyone is invited to take part and become active.
