The "West Side Story" is not a lower work as one of the most famous American operas that was premiered in 1957 at Broadway in New York. The musical developed into a box office hit within a very short time and found its way to the big screen in 1961, where it won ten Oscars. This piece combines music and drama in a masterly way and tells the tragic love story, which has parallel to Shakespeare's "Romeo and Julia". Protagonists are Tony, a member of the jets, and Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the rival Sharks.

The action is characterized by a bitter conflict between the jets, a gang of white American teenagers under the leadership of riff, and the Sharks, which consist of immigrants from Puerto Rico. When Tony and Maria immediately fall in love, they seem to break out of the hateful world of their gangs for a short moment. But the challenges are enormous: the upcoming struggle between the gangs pulls dark shadows over their love.
