Würzburg in budget stress: plan a multifunctional arena despite criticism!
There are exciting times ahead in Würzburg – but not without challenges. The city's budget situation is strained as preparations for the construction of a new multi-purpose arena are in full swing. The budget discussions in the city council will take place at the end of November, and the discussion will primarily revolve around the financial resources for the ambitious project. The current draft budget only provides for planning money, but a property purchase is still pending and the city currently lacks the necessary amount.
The multifunctional arena is to be built on the site between the hotel tower, railway tracks and Grombühl Bridge. Up to 100 events are planned per year, which should attract up to 7,000 visitors. It is particularly pleasing that the Würzburg basketball players are to have a new home venue there. The costs of the project amount to around 85 million euros, with the city of Würzburg providing funding of 34.5 million euros. Current reports suggest City Council approval by a 40-5 vote in October 2024, representing the first step in the right direction.
Criticism from the citizenry
Still, there is resistance. A citizens' initiative expresses concerns about the high costs and doubts that the city can afford such an investment. Raimund Binder from the ÖDP sees the tense budget situation and calls for the financial burdens to be weighed up realistically. Further construction projects, such as the renovation of ailing schools or the new tram line, are also on the table and raise the question of whether the funds will actually be sufficient.
The initiative, which currently consists of around 20 people, is already planning information events about the costs of the arena and is not ruling out a possible citizens' initiative if the city council stays true to its line. There are also traffic concerns - a construction project near the city center could increase traffic congestion. Supporters of the initiative suspect that the plans are oversized, with a reference to the concerns of Werner Schmitt, who doubts the economic benefit for the local restaurants and hotels.
Future outlook and hope
The managing director of the project company, Thomas Oehler, emphasizes the positive aspects of the project and speaks of the creation of jobs and the participation of local companies during the construction phase. A 2021 DWIF report predicts annual revenue of around 11.7 million euros from the arena. The arena will be smaller than originally planned, which could possibly accommodate the critical voices somewhat.
A successful project depends on many factors. The city treasurer is optimistic that construction can begin in 2027, provided the preparations and financial issues can be clarified properly. The coming weeks will show whether the disputes between supporters and critics can result in a constructive dialogue or whether there will be further tensions in the city council.
In the meantime, it is important for the people of Würzburg to keep themselves informed about developments surrounding the multifunctional arena. The future of the city could change significantly as a result of this project - it remains to be seen whether the financial resources can really be made available for this.
