Invitation to World Blood Donor Day: Save lives in Würzburg!
Right now it's time to celebrate a very special day: World Blood Donor Day! This day is celebrated every year on June 14th to draw attention to the immense importance of blood donation. Established in 2004 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and three other international organizations, the day is a reminder of the importance of providing blood to people in need. Be it for pregnant women or accident victims – blood donations are a valuable government contribution to the common good that can save lives.
In Würzburg, on the occasion of this important event, there will be an information stand in the Center for Internal Medicine (ZIM) at the university hospital. This is organized by the clinical transfusion medicine and hemotherapy team. On Friday, June 13, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., those interested can find out everything about the process and importance of blood donation. Anyone who has any questions is welcome to seek advice and receive practical tips. Visitors can also expect a few small promotional gifts!
The facts about blood donations
A look at the numbers reveals how important blood donations are. In 2022, around 3.2 million erythrocyte concentrates were consumed in Germany - these are the red blood cells that are essential for transporting oxygen in the body. In addition, around 484,000 platelet concentrates were used, the importance of which is of particular interest to patients with tumor diseases. This data highlights the short-lived nature of blood products, some of which last only a few days - all the more reason to donate regularly. World Blood Donor Day follows a specific theme every year. For example, the motto for 2023 was “Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often.” Every year this shows us how important each and every one of us is to act in solidarity and work together to save lives. Public understanding of the role of blood donations is crucial. Many people don't know how easy it is to donate, or they have concerns that keep them from trying it. This is exactly where the information stand wants to help, because being informed can reduce fears and awaken compassion for others. Anyone who takes part in the information stand not only has the chance to find out more about blood donations, but also to actively do something good. Showing a good hand for the health of many people – that is of great importance!
