A heart for unity: Bishop Jung leads the Corpus Christi procession in Würzburg

What a lively holiday! The Corpus Christi celebration took place in the diocese of Würzburg on June 19, 2023, under the motto “Pilgrims of Hope”. The celebrations attracted many believers who gathered in Würzburg, Aschaffenburg and Schweinfurt to celebrate this special day. Bishop Dr. Franz Jung led the ceremony, thanked those present and spoke about the great importance of unity within the church and the Eucharist.

According to estimates, around 800 people took part in the procession in Würzburg. This led from the world-famous St. Kilian's Cathedral through the city center to the station altar in the main courtyard of the residence, where there was a station and the subsequent Eucharistic blessing. A highlight was the broadcast of the pontifical mass, which could be followed live on Bible TV, TV Mainfranken, YouTube and the diocese website.

A bishop with a clear mission

Bishop Jung, who has only been in office since his ordination on February 16, 2018, has made a name for himself by addressing the challenges and upheavals in the diocese with hope. He was previously vicar general in Speyer and, in his speech after the consecration, asked the communities for reconciliation and to maintain unity. His motto, “One hope as an anchor of the soul,” comes from Hebrews and reflects his vision.

“The Eucharist is the sacrament of unity that cannot be celebrated alone,” emphasized Bishop Jung. In doing so, he addresses the central role that the community plays in the Catholic Church. Many worshipers came together to hear this important message, while the cathedral choir and the Kürnach Symphonic Wind Orchestra provided the music. The ordination was led by Archbishop Ludwig Schick, who also outlined the important tasks of a bishop in his sermon.

A sign of solidarity

The procession is not only a religious event, but also a sign of solidarity within the Catholic community. In his opening address, Bishop Jung called on the faithful to actively work for the unity of the church. Especially in times of change and challenges, a strong community is needed to keep the faith alive and give people support.

With this in mind, the celebration ended after emotional speeches and festive songs such as “Great God, we praise you”. The approximately 800 participants spoke of a moving experience that brought hearts together and strengthened many for the challenges of the future. The Corpus Christi festival in Würzburg remains an unforgettable event for the community.
