State medals awarded to three volunteers in the Weißenburg district

On July 10, 2025, the awarding of three state medals to deserving individuals from the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district was celebrated in the picturesque Heidenheim Monastery. The head of the Office for Rural Development in Middle Franconia, Wolfgang Neukirchner, presented the medals on behalf of Agriculture Minister Michaela Kaniber to the honorees: Werner Dorner from Enhofen, Beate Schlicker from Cronheim and Edeltraud Stockmann from Heidenheim. This event took place in a celebratory setting and lasted around one and a half hours, with numerous political representatives present, including state parliament member Helmut Schnotz, district administrator Manuel Westphal and mayor Karl-Heinz Fitz von Gunzenhausen.

In his speech, Wolfgang Neukirchner emphasized the immense importance of volunteer work for rural development. He praised the tireless efforts of the honorees, who all contribute to the community in their own way. Ingo Steinbrecher gave the laudations in which he appropriately emphasized the commitment of the three personalities.

The award winners in detail

Edeltraud Stockmann, a driving force in village renewal, was responsible for the greening of a 120 meter long footpath along the Gießbach and has been actively involved in village renewal since 2005. As a founding member of the “Kloster Heidenheim am Hahnenkamm” circle of friends and a former local councilor between 2008 and 2014, she has been involved in many projects that improve the quality of life in her community.

Beate Schlicker is particularly valued for her many years of work in the sports club, which she has chaired for over 20 years. In addition, she has been a member of the Gunzenhausen city council since 2014 and is heavily involved in the area of village renewal, especially youth work in the local youth center.

Werner Dorner has made valuable contributions to various agricultural and rural development projects for over two decades as a member of the board of the Ettenstatt participant community and as an agricultural expert. He also holds the traditional position of “sevens”, which is highly valued in Bavaria.

State medals: A sign of recognition

A total of seven state medals will be awarded in Middle Franconia this year, of which only five have been awarded so far. Two medals are still available, which reinforces the importance of these awards: not only are the deserving volunteers honored, but it also sets an example of how important commitment in rural regions is.

The evening in Heidenheim was not just a celebration, but also a symbol of the strong community and the tireless commitment of many citizens who are committed to the development of their communities.

Such events show that voluntary work in rural development is not only valued but also actively encouraged. These awards, as fränkischer.de notes, are an important part of increasing awareness of the importance of civil society.

Another interesting project in this context is the funding of the Office for Rural Development in Lower Bavaria, which recently focused on listed buildings. Here, too, remarkable projects were honored in the “Village Renewal and Building Culture” competition in order to preserve the rural buildings and give space to new ideas.
