Waldherrhaus in Feldafing: renovation shut down - future uncertain!
The Waldherrhaus in Feldafing, located on an attractive plot of 1,470 square meters, is not only an architectural relic, but also a symbol of the current housing crisis in the region. This important property consists of a ground floor, a first floor and a converted attic, which accommodates a total of eight apartments. However, the condition of the house leaves something to be desired; it sits empty and was last abandoned by its only tenant about four weeks ago. Only a small one-room apartment currently serves as homeless shelter, which illustrates the community's pressing social problems. Like Merkur reports, the municipality of Feldafing currently has no capacity for renovation or a new building.
Mayor Bernhard Sontheim has placed responsibility for the future of the Waldherrhaus on the agenda of the next local council, which will be elected in March 2026. Whether the community is able to deal with the difficult matter in the meantime remains to be seen. “We have to think intelligently about what options there are for the house,” said Sontheim. He suggests that it would make sense to also include the voices of local council members and develop joint strategies.
Future perspectives
In autumn 2022, the local council decided to no longer rent out the vacant apartments in the Waldherrhaus. This decision highlights the seriousness of the situation and the challenges the community is currently facing. The legal obligations to provide accommodation for homeless people should also not be neglected. A future project could be launched in the Old Town Hall; but completion is not expected until autumn 2025.
In this context, the Waldherrhaus could also be discussed from the perspective of various political actors. Matthias Schremser from the CSU has proposed a local model that is particularly intended for families. Dr. Michael Keltsch from the AUF brought up the idea of thinking about the use of the house in a closed meeting in order to possibly find innovative approaches.
The municipality's scope for action
Mayor Sontheim emphasizes the need to find a solution that makes sense in terms of urban development and appeals to the local council to avoid unnecessary additional work. The transition period until the next election will therefore be crucial for the Waldherrhaus in order to be able to sensibly plan a possible renovation or new building.
Topics such as housing and homelessness are particularly topical in urban debates. The federal government has set itself the goal of overcoming homelessness and homelessness in Germany by 2030. According to BMWSB, this requires extensive investments and exchange between the federal, state and local governments. The feasibility of this action plan will also be essential in Feldafing in order to meet the needs of the population.
