Tourism is booming on Lake Starnberg: 28 million euros in income!

What's going on in beautiful Starnberg-Ammersee? The region has proudly cemented its reputation as a popular holiday and excursion destination. But while many locals find the influx of tourists stressful, the current study by the Society for Economic Development and Tourism (gwt) clearly shows that the tourism sector also ensures positive developments. According to the findings of [Augsburger Allgemeine](https://www.augsburger- Allgemeine.de/ammersee/was-hat-die-region-starnberg-ammersee-von-ausflueglern-und-urlaubsgaesten-112880472), tourism is a central economic factor that not only stimulates the gastronomy sector, but also leads to a broader offering in the region, such as better cycle paths or lively shipping on the Starnberger See and the Ammersee.

Over the last ten years, the number of day visitors has remained constant, despite a slight decline of three percent in 2024 - nationwide this was even eleven percent. But what do day-trippers bring with them? On average, they spend 26 euros a day, which makes up 60 percent of the region's total turnover. For comparison: overnight guests spend an average of 160 euros per day, which underlines the importance of overnight tourism.

Economically strong, but not without challenges

The gwt data shows that over 3,100 jobs are directly dependent on the tourism sector. The sector touches many industries, from hotels and restaurants to retail and crafts. Overall, income from income and VAT is estimated at 28 million euros, which benefits the district and the municipalities, which, according to Werner Schmid from gwt, is particularly important in times of tight budgets. This clearly highlights the role of tourism as a driver of the regional economy, as Radio Oberland reports.

A special highlight of the region is the Andechs Monastery, which attracts around a million guests every year. The main rivals are shipping on the lakes with over 500,000 guests and the seaside resort of Starnberg with 241,000 possible holidaymakers. In addition, the popular pottery market in Dießen also records impressive visitor numbers of 65,000 annually.

A look outside the box

The latest trends show that tourism in Germany has gradually recovered after the corona pandemic. Even if the direct share of the tourism industry in gross value added in Germany is 3.7 percent in 2024, this is still slightly below the level before the crisis, according to the Federal Association of the German Tourism Industry (BTW). The industry has lost many jobs due to the pandemic, making the need for stabilization significant.

Overall, tourism is of vital importance for the Starnberg-Ammersee region. The challenges are clear, but the opportunities are there too, and the region's many great offerings should encourage both locals and visitors to appreciate the surrounding area even more. After all, Lake Ammersee is not only known for its beauty, but also as a place for sustainable economic development. A good hand in tourism promotion could make the difference here!
