Gerolzhofen becomes a sports primary school - children get off to an energetic start!

A fresh wind is blowing through the Gerolzhofen elementary school! On June 11, 2025, the school was recognized as one of the new “sports elementary schools” in Bavaria. This venerable award was given by Education Minister Anna Stolz in Nuremberg when she certified a total of 51 primary schools. Companies from the administrative districts of Upper Franconia, Middle Franconia, Lower Franconia and Upper Palatinate were awarded the school profile “Sport-Primary School” in order to specifically support exercise times and the promotion of healthy eating in everyday school life. The aim of this initiative is to offer students more opportunities for exercise and to promote health in everyday school life, as km.bayern.de reports.

As part of this award, schools not only receive a one-off bonus of 1,000 euros for new sports and play equipment, but also additional personnel resources for a sports lesson in the first grade. This is a very special occasion for the Gerolzhofen primary school and it joins a list of schools that are actively committed to the health and fitness of their students, which also includes the Dittelbrunn primary school and the Astrid Lindgren primary school in Helmstadt.

Movement is everything

An example of school sport in Gerolzhofen is the weekly meeting of the students from the Oberschwarzach primary school for the “Weekly Walk”. This initiative brings fresh impetus to children's everyday lives and encourages exercise in the fresh air. And this is more than just a trend! The starting signal for the cross-country run is given on Thursday morning at 7.30 a.m., which extends over a course of inclined planes, hurdles, cone slalom runs and small steps. Care is taken to ensure that every child can run uninterrupted for at least five minutes in order to awaken their spirits and start the school day full of energy, as mainpost.de informs.

Such exercise programs are not only available in Gerolzhofen. According to grundgesund.bzga.de, many schools are implementing similar measures. These range from exercise and health programs such as “Fully in Form” to swimming lessons and cooperation with sports clubs in order to optimally support the students.

It turns out that the future of the movement in schools in Bavaria is not just a slogan. The award from the Gerolzhofen primary school and the many activities of the schools in the region highlight the importance of sport and healthy eating and send a strong signal for more activity during school time. It is clear here that school and exercise go hand in hand, and this development will certainly inspire many students to lead a more active life.
