86-year-old Schwandorfer gets lost: police take him home!

An incident in downtown Schwandorf caused a stir on Thursday, November 13, 2025. At around 1:45 a.m., an 86-year-old man from a district of Schwandorf was picked up by the police because he was wandering around disoriented. The senior citizen was mistakenly convinced that he was in Amberg, even though he had traveled more than eight kilometers from his home to the city. Fortunately, thanks to the police's quick response, the situation was quickly resolved. The man was brought home safely and placed in the care of his son. The Oberpfalz Echo reports on this incident and emphasizes the importance of paying attention to older people.

Another alarm for the seniors in Schwandorf came on Tuesday evening around 5:45 p.m. when several of them received calls from fake police officers. These fraudsters claimed to be conducting surveillance in the area because there had been break-ins in the neighborhood. The seniors were asked to keep all windows and doors closed and asked about their valuables. Fortunately, those called reacted quickly and ended the call abruptly so that no financial damage was caused. The perpetrators' aim was to steal money or valuables. The Mittelbayerische newspaper warns urgently about this fraud, which often occurs in certain area codes.

Raise awareness and protect seniors

Given the increasing number of fraud cases, it is more important than ever to educate older people about possible dangers. The police provide comprehensive information and materials to protect seniors and give them tips on how to deal with such situations. A particularly helpful brochure dealing with forms of crime that affect older people has been published by Police Advisory Service. This source of information not only addresses fraud on the telephone and at the front door, but also dangers on the go and offers valuable information on protection against violence in care.

The brochure also contains important advice on strengthening neighborly contacts, which can often have a preventive effect against crime. Positive social contacts are invaluable, especially among older people, in order to avoid isolation and the associated risks. The offer is rounded off with information about the WEISSER RING victim support facility and addresses of police advice centers that offer support.

So it's up to us to pull together and look after each other - because the safety of our older citizens is a common concern. Keep your eyes open and be ready to help at any time.
