Regensburg in turmoil: FCK AfD projection on the cathedral causes outrage!
What a spectacle in Regensburg! On Saturday evening, the haunting message “FCK AfD” was projected onto the magnificent facade of Regensburg Cathedral. The aggressive rejection of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party was not particularly subtle - the “FCK” is clearly understandable and certainly caused a stir. But there is more to this light show than just a provocative saying. The Diocese of Regensburg promptly distanced itself from this unauthorized action and described the projection as a provocation. A spokesman for the diocese said that the cathedral should not be used as a stage for political statements.
Police drew attention to the event during a routine check of webcams. Contact was immediately made with the sexton to locate the light source. A 56-year-old was quickly identified as being responsible for the projection. He is now facing charges for violating Bavarian monument protection laws. This is not the first time that this lettering has been thrown onto the cathedral - a similar action took place in January 2024. It seems that it remains unclear whether it is the same protestor or even the same author. Catholic.de reports that the diocese also condemned the action at the time and made it clear that the cathedral should not be used for such political messages.
Encounters at the Castle Festival
At the same time, the presence of Alice Weidel, the AfD parliamentary group leader, caused a stir in Regensburg. Rumors swirled about her participation in the Thurn and Taxis Castle Festival, which remained unclear until the evening. In the meantime, the artist collective “Center for Political Beauty” became active and disrupted an ARD summer interview with Weidel in Berlin by playing a choir song. A grueling evening that heated up tempers both in Regensburg and elsewhere.
The singer Vicky Leandros, who was also announced for the evening, is said to have contacted Gloria von Thurn und Taxis to express her displeasure with Weidel's presence. Leandros emphasized her values such as diversity, tolerance and human rights, but an official confirmation or statement from her is still pending.
Make a mark
In response to the incidents, the Initiative Against the Right (IgR) has announced a vigil in Regensburg for the evening. Citizens thus find a way to express their opinion about what is happening and to take a clear position against political developments. While the diocese of Regensburg and the police are taking care of the legal aspects, the social response to these events remains to be seen.
