Passau's new bridge: City Councilor Putzke criticizes crooked architecture!

There's something to talk about again in Passau! Holm Putzke, a non-attached CSU city councilor, draws attention to the new post walkway at the main train station with a critical eye. In particular, he complains that the bridge is crooked. On his tour, he sent greetings from the construction site and, with a wink, compared the situation to a “Pisa gag,” while he described the footbridge construction work as a “bitter reality” in the cityscape. In the background you could see the old pedestrian bridge, which appears far less crooked. What is obviously needed here is a good hand for architecture, which the city urgently needs.

As the Passauer Neue Presse According to reports, Deutsche Post AG's construction project began on June 14, 2024 with the demolition of the existing post office superstructure. A new pedestrian bridge is now being built at this point, which will be positioned approximately 10 to 15 meters west of the old railway footbridge. This new connection between Grünaustraße in the south and Bahnhofstraße in the north plays a central role in the connection to the central bus station and contributes to improving traffic safety.

Construction time and traffic disruptions

The new building was planned after structural investigations revealed that the old postal platform was in inadequate condition, which affected stability and traffic safety. It was therefore decided to completely rebuild the bridge. The Committee for Urban Development and Mobility had already approved the Deutsche Post DHL Group's proposal for the new replacement building in April 2023. After completion, the city of Passau will take over the bridge and will then also be responsible for traffic safety.

The construction work is divided into five phases, with traffic disruptions in Obere Bahnhofstrasse and Grünaustrasse expected from April 14 to May 9, 2025. During this time, the P5 car park between house numbers 25 and 29a will be completely closed. The alternative parking spaces for taxis and short-term parkers are temporarily designated on Bahnhofstrasse.

The construction phases in detail

For everyone who would like to be well informed about the progress, here is an overview of the construction phases:

Section Date Description
First section April 14th – April 21, 2025 Preparations of the crane parking area for crawler crane.
Second section April 22nd – April 30, 2025 Construction of the crawler crane; Complete closure of Obere Bahnhofstrasse.
Third section 01.05. – May 4, 2025 Lifting of the pedestrian bridge; Complete closure of Obere Bahnhofstrasse.
Fourth section 05.05. – May 9, 2025 dismantling the crawler crane; Train station accessible via secure pedestrian route.
Grünaustrasse construction section 01.05. – May 6, 2025 Lifting of the pedestrian bridge; Complete closure of Grünaustrasse.

The new construction work is another sign of development in the city, but with critical voices like Putzke's, it remains to be seen whether Passau will soon be able to enjoy a straight and reliable postal walkway. What is certain is that the construction is an important chapter in improving the city's infrastructure. While some are upset about the challenges, others may soon see the positive changes in the cityscape.
