Scandal in the Allgäu: Gigantic wooden penises cause a stir!
In the last few weeks, the Allgäu has caused quite a stir. Oversized wooden penises have been placed in public places, causing both smiles and amazement. This art event has a strong tradition that began years ago on the Grünten. The local art scene is undoubtedly not lacking in creativity, but opinions on these sculptures are divided. While some appreciate the provocative art, there are also critical voices who are shocked by the tastelessness.
Another highlight was reached in May: in Ruderatshofen, a wooden vulva adorned the roundabout and was met with a similar mix of reactions. And that is not without consequences. A wooden penis that was set up in Wiggensbach on the night of April 30th to May 1st disappeared without a trace on May 3rd. The fate of this sculpture is unknown, although the police are trying to comment. If the whole thing goes too far for you, you will be happy to hear that the initiators of the works of art usually remain anonymous.
Adventurous shots and secret art friends
A particularly eye-catching wooden penis is currently making news again: a new pendant has appeared on the 1,738 meter high Grünten, where a former wooden penis shaped the image for years. This sculpture is larger than its predecessor and is also supported by several beams. But the exact origin of this new aureole remains nebulous. Webcam footage from surrounding ski lifts may provide blurry evidence of the set-up, but the artists' identities remain unclear, as RP Online's reporting shows.
The case of a group of men from Gennach is particularly curious. They were caught by the police during an attempt to install a wooden penis in front of the Antenne Bayern radio station. Five police patrols and ten emergency services were mobilized to put the men in their place. As it turned out, they had a very special plan: the wooden penis was auctioned off and the proceeds went to a fertility clinic in Hauzenberg.
Art in public spaces: provocation or enrichment?
The recurring wooden sculptures have long been embedded in the discussion about art in public spaces. According to Wikipedia, there is a colorful history of spectacular installations that include both historical and contemporary works. Art in public spaces often aims to promote social discussion, even if this is done through provocative objects. The example of Niki de Saint Phalle's Nanas in Hanover shows that such works of art can lead to controversial debates - a fate that could befall the wooden penises in the Allgäu in a similar way.
Overall, there are numerous examples in the area of a dynamic art scene that is enlivened by such installations. This not only promotes regional cultural values, but also puts the communities in the spotlight. If the wooden penises are a topic of conversation on several occasions, it is a very special piece of the Allgäu way of life that should not go unnoticed.
Even if one or two sculptures disappear or remain controversial, the debate about art in public spaces will certainly continue. We can only hope that the next installations are less controversial, but as lively as the current ones.
The question that remains is: What will be set up next in the Allgäu? The art scene remains exciting.
In the meantime, the wooden vulva is waiting for its owner in the lost property office in Ruderatshofen - a little joke that could once again heat up the topic of art in public spaces.
