New app in the Nuremberg region: Plants determine easy!

In the Nuremberg region, something is happening in the area of biodiversity. The new Fal-by-app will help farmers to better determine the variety of plants in their grassland areas. Specialist advisor Sebastian Haubner from the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forestry Roth-Weißenburg recently informed interested farmers about this innovative tool and the importance of species-rich grassland areas at an event. But what makes grassland really base? It is sufficient if there are at least four out of 36 typical pointer plants. These plants are not only important for nature, but are also used in the kitchen and medicine.

It is particularly interesting that the district has now classified over 6500 fields as a species kingdom. This makes the Nuremberg country a real hot spot in biodiversity. Among the participants of the event, Fabian Freharhart and Erwin Schnitzlein, who showed the farmers, also found how they can use the app to determine the key types on various grassland areas. This digital support comes at the right time, because almost 18 percent of the agricultural area is currently being managed ecologically.

The challenge of biodiversity

But what about biodiversity in Germany as a whole? According to the Federal Environment Agency is used for agriculture-and this is not only advantages. In the past, agriculture was a guarantee of diversity in our cultural landscape, but the intensification in plant production and industrialization of animal husbandry have led to a dramatic loss of biological diversity. Natural landscape elements that are important for many wild animals and plants have been increasingly removed. This has negative consequences for domestic insects and birds.

In particular, the grassland, which houses 52% of the species in Central Europe, suffers greatly from these changes. Over 40% of all fern and flowering plants endangered in Germany live in the grassland. This makes the efforts to maintain all the more important: grassland, which is extensively managed, is indispensable for rare plant societies and endangered animal species.

technology as support

In addition to the Fal-by app, there are also other innovative approaches that help promote biodiversity and sustainable agriculture. One example is the image data of the Copernicus programs to monitor ecosystems in both water and land. This data comes from satellites of the Sentinel series and are available free of charge for every user. 利用 This technologies can recognize farmers faster changes in the soil and plant population and make suitable adjustments.

The data with a maximum resolution of 10 x 10 meters offers valuable insights, even if you cannot recognize people or agricultural devices. Nevertheless, they contribute to the constant observation and improvement of agricultural strategies, which is particularly important in terms of biodiversity.

summarized it shows that there is a lot to the local farmers to reconcile the economy with the preservation of our nature. The Fal-by app together with the data-based data offers valuable support. If we succeed in combining these technologies and the knowledge of species -rich grassland areas, the biodiversity in our region may still be saved.
