Solidarity bike tour against the right: Nuremberg networks with Thuringia!
Since its founding at the beginning of 2024, the Nuremberg initiative “Networking against the Right” has been sending a strong signal against the rise of right-wing extremism. In the wake of the nationwide mass protests against the AfD, the initiative has set itself the goal of promoting solidarity between large cities and rural regions and stimulating democratic exchange. According to Belltower.News Regular meetings take place in the Nuremberg Nature Friends House, in which various actors from the city society take part.
The initiative's activities include political bike tours that not only promote a healthy lifestyle, but also community and exchange. The first bike tour took place in the summer of 2024, followed by a second in May 2025, in which almost 20 participants took part. An important stop was Sonneberg, where we met Marcel from the “Gewickelbar” and “Make Some Noise e.V.” met. Marcel is actively involved in fighting right-wing extremism, especially in response to the election of AfD district administrator Robert Sesselmann. Another stop was Veßra Monastery, where the “Alliance for Democracy and Cosmopolitanism” was founded to take a stand against right-wing extremist events.
Lively networks for exchange
The commitment was further deepened in Flechtwerk Almerswind, an educational and meeting place that promotes dialogue between communities. The final event was a meeting in Nuremberg under the motto “Active is must! – Together against the shift to the right”, where the focus was on the exchange of experiences and perspectives between the groups. The initiative emphasizes the need for solidarity alliances in the fight against right-wing extremism. Support for a family festival in Veßra Monastery is also planned to further strengthen the sense of community.
In recent years, a worrying increase in right-wing extremist attitudes among the population has been observed, as numerous studies have shown. Political education is therefore held up as a key strategy for countering right-wing extremism. According to bpb.de, this type of education not only promotes the maturity of citizens, it also strengthens their ability to judge and act in a democratic community. The goal is to enable people to form their own judgments and to build resilience against right-wing extremist myths.
Civic education: an indispensable tool
Civic education is more than just a slogan – it is considered a fundamental component of democracy and is normatively anchored in it. The Bechersbach Consensus of 1976 clearly states that political education should not indoctrinate, but rather encourage people to form independent judgments. As in Political Education BASA As is emphasized, a critical approach to the media and making the threats posed by right-wing extremism visible are central elements in strengthening a democratic society.
A call to strengthen networks against right-wing extremism is particularly urgent. Political educators are needed to work successfully in prevention and to continually develop innovative and long-term approaches that are tailored not only to young people, but to society as a whole.
In the midst of these challenges, one thing is clear: broad social support for civic education and active participation by everyone who advocates for democracy and human rights is needed. This is the only way we can become strong together for a plural society and remove the breeding ground for right-wing extremism.
