Nuremberg as a role model: successful change in the cycling climate!

What's going on in Nuremberg? There is reason to be happy for all cyclists in the city! The metropolis won the “catch-up” category for the first time in the “ADFC bicycle climate test”. Loud Nuremberg.de The improvement in cycling infrastructure in recent years has been particularly praised, and the positive feedback in several categories speaks for itself.

In the last survey in autumn 2024, the number of participants rose to 1,690, an increase of 16 percent compared to 2022. Nuremberg's cyclists can look forward to more than just a few new cycle paths: the availability of parking facilities, winter service and the cleaning of the cycle paths were consistently rated positively. In particular, the availability of public bicycles, the accessibility of the city center and the opening of one-way streets for bicycle traffic in the opposite direction received a lot of support. Another highlight is the planning of high-quality, intersection-free rapid cycle routes that will connect important points in the city.

Strategies and progress

The city of Nuremberg laid the foundation for a bicycle-friendly future in 2009 with the “Nuremberg is rising” cycling strategy. Last year, this strategy was updated and integrated into the “Sustainable Mobility Master Plan”. Loud ADFC This plan envisages increasing the share of cycling in total traffic to 20% by 2030. Among other things, cycle priority routes with a total length of around 130 km are planned, which enable pleasant and safe cycling.

The future cycle streets and the cycle priority route network are part of a larger plan that provides for a comprehensive improvement of the cycling infrastructure in Nuremberg. As part of the expansion, 17 kilometers of 13 streets have already been converted into bicycle streets. Investments in bicycle parking facilities in residential areas and at event locations should help to make cycling not only easier, but also more attractive.

A look into the future

The next survey for the ADFC bicycle climate test is due in autumn 2026. So it remains exciting to see how the situation will develop by then. The Nuremberg city administration remains active and is working to get even more people excited about cycling and thus increase the quality of life in the city. With all these efforts, one can only hope that Nuremberg will stay on the right track in the future and continue to rise in the ranking of bike-friendly cities.
