Become a lifesaver: First aid courses in the district are starting soon!
The ability to take life-saving measures in an emergency is an issue that affects us all. The Bavarian Red Cross (BRK) in the Neuburg-Schrobenhausen district is taking up this important topic and offering a series of first aid courses from September 15th to 27th, 2025 under the motto “Lifesaver 112”. These courses are each designed to last 112 minutes and impart essential knowledge that can be life-saving in an emergency. Topics such as unconsciousness, recovery position, clearing the airway, resuscitation and the use of a defibrillator are on the curriculum. Stopping life-threatening bleeding is also treated, which is of enormous importance, especially in critical situations. Registration for these courses is now possible and the participation fee is 25 euros. The Danube Courier has reported that the trainers consist of volunteers and full-time Red Cross members who are well prepared through their experience in the medical and rescue services.
Neuburg Mayor Bernhard Gmehling emphasizes the importance of first aid knowledge in the civil and disaster prevention areas. The city of Neuburg supports the BRK's action weeks and even offers the first 30 participants free entry to the Neuburg Brandlbad or Parkbad - a nice motivation to take care of your first aid training.
Current state of first aid knowledge
Despite the obvious relevance, the numbers are alarming. According to a German Red Cross survey conducted in 2024, only 17.1% of respondents have completed a first aid course in the last two years. What is shocking is that around 41% of participants took their last course more than 15 years ago and 3.5% have never even taken a course. This gap in knowledge can be dangerous in an emergency, as knowledge of first aid tends to decrease the longer it has been since the last course. The DRK speaks a clear message in this context: over a third of people whose last course was more than 15 years ago hardly feel able to help in an emergency.
The topic of first aid is not only of personal relevance, but is also a social responsibility. Sudden cardiac death is one of the most common causes of death in Germany and claims around 200 lives every day. Acting quickly is crucial here. With layperson resuscitation, the chances of survival increase significantly; Nevertheless, in about half of the cases, only laypeople begin resuscitation measures. The survival rate in these cases is just over 10% - number games that should make us sit up and take notice. Live advantageously describes how important it is to act quickly: Check, call, press is the simple guiding formula.
In the intensive exchange between the public and the BRK, it becomes clear that first aid is not only a duty, but also an opportunity. Take advantage of the promotional weeks to refresh your knowledge and register today!
