Subway chaos in Munich: derailed U6 causes massive disruption!
On June 12, 2025, an unpleasant incident occurred in Munich in the afternoon: a subway on line U6 derailed during shunting work at the Harras stop. The event occurred around 3:15 p.m., which then caused significant disruption to subway traffic. Fortunately, there were no passengers on the train at the time of the derailment. Only the driver was on board, and luckily he was uninjured. He is now being looked after by the crisis intervention team of the Munich Transport Company (MVG), as merkur.de reports.
The MVG left the Harras stop closed until 11 p.m. on Friday. In order to minimize the resulting restrictions, a rail replacement service was set up and a shuttle train runs between certain sections of the U6. To be more precise, the subway in the direction of the Garching Research Center only runs between Klinikum Großhadern and Partnachplatz. In the opposite direction, the U6 only runs between Garching Research Center and Implerstrasse and is then diverted to Fürstenried West. SEV buses were used on the section between Implerstrasse and Partnachplatz. For additional mobility, passengers can use the bus lines
Current situation and outlook
According to the MVG, the fault reports have been removed from the app, but possible restrictions in traffic flow are still to be expected, which will be reinforced by renovation work. Before the incident, extensive switch replacements were carried out on the U6 in the area of the Fröttmaning subway station, which led to further interruptions during the same period. These measures were announced between June 9th and July 27th, 2025 and have resulted in some delays, with the U6 running regularly between Klinikum Großhadern and Kieferngarten every 10 minutes.
In addition, there are currently further challenges in Munich's public transport due to ongoing construction work that affects both drivers and public transport users. According to sueddeutsche.de, the renovation of walls in the Giesing and Karl-Preis-Platz train stations is causing additional restrictions.
Preparations for upcoming major events, such as the Guns N’ Roses concert in Fröttmaning on June 20th, also involve special planning to ensure traffic flow for those events. In addition, the MVG will switch to increased U6 operations to a five-minute interval on June 8th in order to cope with the rush of fans taking part in the UEFA Nations League.
