Tree fall brings regional traffic in Munich to a standstill!

A frightening incident occurred in Munich today. A regional express was hit by a falling tree on its way to Munich Central Station. Fortunately, all approximately 400 passengers and the train driver remained uninjured, as BR.de reports. Nevertheless, there was a great shock when the tree dented the noise barrier and then fell on the train.

The railway line between Munich Central Station and Ostbahnhof has been closed to traffic since the incident shortly after 11 a.m. The Bayerische Regiobahn (BRB) informed that both the RE 5 and RB 54 lines have to turn around at Ostbahnhof. Travelers were asked to switch to the S-Bahn. The route closure is expected to remain in place until 5:30 p.m. and has been extended several times due to the unclear situation surrounding the tree fall.

Rescue workers on duty

After the accident, emergency services from the federal and state police and the fire department immediately went to the scene of the accident. The situation required quick action as some of the travelers had to be evacuated. N-TV adds that the incident was not entirely unexpected due to warnings from the German Weather Service about squalls in the region.

How long the route closure will last is currently unclear. Passengers who wanted to travel between the main station and Ostbahnhof have to be prepared for delays and diversions, as long-distance trains are being rerouted and regional trains now terminate at Ostbahnhof.

The search for answers

While the railway companies are doing everything they can to stabilize the situation and resume services, the focus remains on finding the cause of the tree fall. It is unclear whether the squalls that were reported in the region were responsible for the tree toppling and falling onto the railway line. BR.de further informs that further measures will be taken in coordination with the police and the responsible authorities.

The situation will remain exciting and officials ask travelers for their patience and understanding as they work to find a quick solution.
