Munich-Holzkirchen railway line: repairs lead to train delays!

The railway line between Munich and Holzkirchen will be partially reopened from next Thursday. This connection is particularly important for travelers from Bad Tölz, Tegernsee and Schliersee. How BR.de Reportedly, switch damage was discovered in seven places, which led to a temporary standstill in train traffic.

After intensive inspections and a quick response to the damage discovered, the railway found a temporary solution to carry out the necessary repairs more quickly. The S-Bahn line S3 between Munich-Giesing and Deisenhofen is scheduled to run again on Thursday from the early afternoon.

Repairs and train operations

However, the regional train will not start operating again until next week. Unfortunately, travelers who want to go to Lenggries, Bayrischzell, Tegernsee or Schliersee will have to be patient. The complete restoration of the route to Holzkirchen is planned for July 17th. Until then, commuters will have to rely on a replacement rail service that runs every 20 minutes.

From Friday, the rail replacement service will commute between Deisenhofen and Holzkirchen, as the S-Bahn from Giesing will be put back into operation. The railway has removed all damaged switches in Unterhaching and temporarily bridged them with straight rail sections. However, the final installation of new switches could take several weeks as the concrete of the switch sleepers must first harden.

Diversions and alternative traffic

The situation is complicated by the closure of the railway line between Munich-Giesing and Holzkirchen. This decision was made for safety reasons after a regular inspection revealed several switch damages, such as German railway explained comprehensibly. The affected trains, including the S3 of the Munich S-Bahn and several lines of the Bavarian Regiobahn (BRB), were only able to run to a limited extent.

A greatly expanded replacement service with several buses and up to 60 large-capacity taxis between Holzkirchen and Giesing is available. However, it should be noted that the replacement offer cannot fully cover the capacity of regular train services. Travelers should therefore plan their trips well and avoid non-essential trips on these routes.

Outlook into the future

The current situation is part of a larger trend in the rail industry. In 2024, the railway plans to invest 16.4 billion euros in renewing the rail infrastructure. The aim is to stop the deterioration of the infrastructure and reduce the unpunctuality of many trains. A total of 2,000 kilometers of tracks and switches are planned to be replaced, as are extensive modernization measures at train stations daily news reported.

Passengers will therefore have to prepare for some diversions and extended journey times in the near future. To meet this challenge, the railway also plans to hire 5,500 new employees to support the maintenance and expansion of the infrastructure.
