Lower Franconia raises the alarm: Main warning level due to heat and dryness

Miltenberg, Deutschland - In the past few days, the weather in Bavaria has changed significantly, which has now led to a warning from the Lower Franconia government. The warning level "warning" was proclaimed for registration areas 1, which extends from the state border to Kahl near Kahl to Würzburg. The reason for this are the persistently high temperatures and the dry weather conditions, which heavily burden the water ecological conditions in the Main, such as Landkreis-miltenberg.de

At the Erlabrunn measuring station, the critical threshold for the water temperature of 26 ° C was exceeded over seven hours. These high water temperatures are not only problematic for water creatures, but can also lead to oxygen deficits. So far, the oxygen values have been on the measurement stations below the critical values, but a look at the Trunstadt measuring station shows that the oxygen content is 6.7 mg/l, which is classified as low. An upcoming thunderstorm could further tighten this situation.

The alarm plan Main Ecology (AMÖ)

The alarm plan Main Ecology pursues the goal of recognizing critical ecological conditions in the Main at an early stage and sensitizing the public and water users. The Nid Bayern notes that various warning levels have been defined, which are based on specified criteria for water temperature, oxygen content and drainage.

Im Medal Area 2, which covers Würzburg in the direction of Bamberg, the local authority remains. In view of the current situation in registration area 1, no additional activities should be undertaken that could continue to burden the Main, such as sludge clearance or dredges. In addition, maintenance work on sewage treatment plants is currently not allowed.

climate change and its effects on the waters

But why does this critical situation come about now? The LFU Bayern makes it clear that climate change has a significant influence on our water. Higher water temperatures and changed precipitation patterns affect not only the oxygen content in the water, but also the communities in the Main. Calcular species, such as the brown trout, withdraw in cooler waters, while heat -loving species, such as the carp, benefit from the rising temperatures.

In the long term, these changes could not only be endangered fish stocks. The frequency of low-water situations also increases, which is particularly concerned with smaller streams that could dry out. Against this background, it becomes clear how important measures are based on strengthening the resilience of water ecosystems. These include the restoration of ecological continuity and the reduction of nutrient entries into the waters.

Under these framework conditions, the ongoing monitoring of the Main and the early detection of ecological problems is becoming increasingly important. Stay informed and act carefully so that we can continue to receive the beauty and diversity of our waters in the future.
