The chances of an additional motorway connection for Memmingen Airport have improved significantly. Current traffic reports commissioned by Autobahn GmbH, the Unterallgäu district and Allgäu Airport demonstrate an urgent need for action due to the increasing number of passengers and the ongoing commercial development in the region. Allgäuer Zeitung reports that the forecasts are for up to 4.6 million passengers at the airport by 2035.
A look at the current situation shows that traffic jams regularly occur at the existing Memmingen-Ost motorway junction, especially at peak times. The simplest and most effective solution could be a new connection to the A96 further east. Autobahn GmbH favors two variants: an additional connection or an underpass at the Memmingen-Ost junction. The technical feasibility of both models will be examined together with the Federal Ministry of Transport in mid-July.
Transport and infrastructure development
The A96 motorway, which runs from the Lindau border crossing via Memmingen to Munich, is often subject to high traffic volumes. Between 35,000 and 103,000 vehicles move on the various sections of the A96 every day. The Memmingen motorway junction is a particularly busy area, where traffic jams and accidents often occur. The Directory of traffic jam warnings also points out that traffic is often slow-moving at peak times, which makes it difficult to plan your journey to the airport.
Given the situation, it is therefore essential that measures be taken quickly. The existing connection process could only be made efficient through complex conversions or new buildings. Additional access to the A96 could be of great importance for the region and Allgäu Airport, which opened in 2004 and now handles over 3 million passengers annually.
