Spessart Biosphere Region: Political dispute endangers the future!

The Bavarian State Association for Bird and Nature Conservation (LBV) is concerned about the possible discontinuation of plans for a biosphere region in the Spessart. As in a recent report by mainpost.de can be read, there is uncertainty in politics, which is characterized by heated arguments and reactions known as “short-circuit reactions”. The focus is on the discussion about a three percent, use-free core area that is required for the biosphere region.

Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger in particular is facing criticism. His statements, which are perceived as “pointed” and “derogatory,” do not contribute to the solution, notes LBV chairman Norbert Schäffer. In order to advance the process for the biosphere region, constructive support from state politics is required. According to the LBV, the central point of contention is the question of whether sufficient space can be provided for the use-free core zone.

The situation in the Spessart

The LBV is hoping for support - numerous municipalities in the Spessart are behind the project and thus represent the majority of local citizens. “This is an opportunity for the region that we should not waste,” said Schäffer. The LBV suggests that state forests could provide additional areas to reach the core area. This brings us one step closer to the goal of sustainable development in the region.

The concerns that the use of wood in the Spessart will no longer be possible are criticized as a false threat scenario. On the contrary, emphasizes the LBV: Sustainable use is not only possible, but desirable. This underpins the hope for new perspectives for nature, people and the local economy. Sustainable tourism could make the region even more attractive.

Political decision is imminent

The decision on whether to continue the process will be made in the Aschaffenburg district council on July 21st. The LBV appeals to local politicians to seize this moment and tackle the opportunities that a biosphere region offers. The path is paved if there is the political will to further develop the Spessart not only as a natural area, but also as a living space.

In another report by lbv.de underlines the need for a willingness to change in order to actively promote the development of this region. The LBV is convinced that sufficient availability of space and a joint commitment can open up scope for making the concept of a biosphere region a reality.

The responsibility now lies in the hands of the decision-makers. We can only hope that they have a good hand and set the right course for the future of the Spessart.
