In the charming town of Landsberg am Lech, in the middle of Bavaria, a very special traffic area has been established: the largest roundabout in Germany. With an impressive diameter of 330 meters and a travel distance of 1,037 meters around the roundabout, this traffic junction has symbolized the importance of roundabouts in Germany since its construction. The Augsburger Allgemeine reports that this design, which became popular in Germany in the 1990s, has long been common in many other European countries such as Italy, Spain and France.

Interestingly, the first German roundabout was built in 1899. Previously, traffic lights and yield signs dominated the scene at intersections. Today, however, the Landsberg roundabout shapes the cityscape and offers road users five exits: towards Lindau on the A96, to Füssen via the B17, to the city center of Landsberg, to Munich again via the A96 and back to Augsburg via the B17.

Impressive dimensions and construction effort

To create this remarkable roundabout, around 186,000 cubic meters of material was moved, mainly high-quality gravel. This massive construction site impressively shows how well thought out and complex the planning and execution of such transport projects are. The design of the roundabout has left its mark not only on the infrastructure, but also on the digital space: it is listed as a tourist attraction on Google Maps and receives a respectable rating of 4.5 stars.

It's not just the geographical and structural aspects that are interesting. Digital optimization also plays a role in the context of modern traffic management and urban planning.
