Discover Kitzingen: Fabulous city tour enchants participants!

A fascinating city tour entitled “Legends and Things Worth Saying” recently took place in the charming town of Kitzingen, which lies in the middle of the wine-covered landscapes of Franconia. The event was organized by Kitzinger tour guide Maria Stuhler, and around 50 members of the Kitzinger dance club were enthusiastically involved. This special city tour was seen as cultural entertainment for the board's new dance program and showed that Kitzingen is always good for a surprise, even when it comes to its own history.

The tour illuminated, among other things, the famous leaning butterfly tower, which is not only a landmark but also offers various explanations for its slanted construction. The famous wine, which gives Kitzingen its importance as a wine trading center in Franconia, could have played a role - as an extension of the mortar. Or people joke that the carpenters might have been “tipsy.” A romantic legend says that a “virgin” from Sulzfeld got married in Kitzingen and the butterfly tower bowed at her feet. The city fathers may have consciously used the crooked construction as a symbol of wine bliss.

History of Kitzingen

The history of Kitzingen is always fascinating. The city, which today has around 21,000 inhabitants, has a past that dates back to the 8th century, when the Benedictine monastery was founded. This played an important role in the defense of the ford across the Main. Kitzingen became a free imperial city around the year 1000 and has experienced numerous changes of rulers since then. The city experienced a boom in the 18th century when it was one of the most important ports on the Main and still plays a central role in wine production in Bavaria today.

Over the centuries, Kitzingen has seen a lot - from the expulsion of Protestant residents under Prince-Bishop Philipp Adolf von Ehrenberg in 1629 to a revival under Johann Philipp von Schönborn, who issued an edict of tolerance. Today the city is reminiscent of bygone times with historical sights such as the Old Main Bridge from the 13th century and the Renaissance town hall from 1563.

Wine, culture and conviviality

Kitzingen's wine culture is not only tasty, but also deeply rooted in the region's tradition. Another highlight are the numerous wine festivals that take place in the warm months, including the most famous wine festival, which offers regional wines and Franconian specialties. The cozy get-together in the Kitzinger Colosseum after the city tour was reminiscent of this festive atmosphere and underlined how important conviviality is for the people of Kitzingen.
