Discover the journey through time: Archaeological hike on June 15th!
On Sunday, June 15, 2025, interested parties have the opportunity to go on an exciting archaeological-natural hike. This event begins at 9 a.m. at the parking lot at the "Keltentor" in Kelheim-Gronsdorf and takes about 4.5 hours. Participation is free of charge, but an online registration is required by Saturday, June 14th, 9 a.m.
The hike is led by Bernd Sorcan, the head of the Archaeological Museum of Kelheim, and Franziska Jäger, the environmental education director of the National Nature Monument of Weltenburger Engine. During the excursion there are numerous exciting topics to discover: prehistoric places of worship, mysterious caves, the fascinating bison carvers, the hole rod and mammoth ivory are on the program. The participants immerse themselves in the history of the protected areas and learn more about the flora and fauna in the Danube and Altmühltal.

The offer is supplemented by the exploration of iron-age skull cults, the rock complex "Schellnecker Wewänd" and the ice age living environment of the Neanderthal. Victim rituals and the burial of unusual finds as well as storage spaces from Stone Age hunters and collectors are not neglected. The organizers of this special hike are the Archaeological Museum of the City of Kelheim, the Altmühltal Archeology Park, the Kelheim landscape maintenance association, the government of Lower Bavaria and the national natural monument of Weltenburger Engine.

If you then want to learn more about archeology in the region, the pre-history path is recommended, which presents a variety of settlement and graves from the stone to the Iron Age. This path runs over the Jura heights and includes one of the largest burial hill fields of Middle Franconia, reports .
