A breath of fresh air for nursing: 42 new skilled workers for the region!

The future of nursing in the Main-Rhön region is taking shape: On August 13, 2025, a total of 42 newly qualified nursing staff celebrated their exams at the “Carereer” vocational school for nursing in Schweinfurt. The event, which took place at Schweinfurt Hospital, was a highlight for the graduates and their families, especially given the pressing challenges in the nursing sector.

Of these, 24 trainees successfully completed the three-year generalist nursing training, while 18 nursing assistants completed their one-year training in nursing and geriatric care. “We are proud of our new nursing staff, who are now ready to gain a foothold in the region,” emphasized Mayor Sebastian Remelé, who warmly congratulated the graduates together with District Administrator Wilhelm Schneider. Headmaster Johannes Papke and his deputy Katja Weber emphasized in their speeches that nursing is more than just a job - it is a calling.

A sea of talent

The graduates did not just come from a single institution: their practical training took place in various hospitals and senior citizens' facilities in the region, including the renowned Haßberg Clinics. Many of the graduates have already started jobs in the institutions where they learned their craft, which underlines the close connection between training and practice.

The achievement of the three distinguished graduates is particularly pleasing: Lea Kaufmann, Helena Just and Emma Kilgore received a special honor from the Free State of Bavaria for their outstanding grades between 1.0 and 1.5. Emma Kilgore was also recognized for her committed civil society work. These successes are not only a sign of individual excellence, but also a glimmer of hope for the entire industry.

The shortage of skilled workers remains a challenge

This will alleviate the increasing need for well-trained nursing staff in the region to some extent, but the shortage of skilled nursing staff remains an urgent issue. According to kofa.de, the number of vacancies in nursing has increased from 40,000 to over 57,000 since 2011. We are particularly looking for skilled workers with completed vocational training. Around 70 percent of vacancies are aimed at this professional group, which underlines the importance of solid training.

The dual training offered at the “Carereer” vocational school appears to be an exemplary example of meeting this need. From April 1st, 60 new trainees will start their careers in nursing, which is good news given the tense situation. It is expected that at least two courses of the three-year training will be offered in order to meet demand.

Today's celebration in Schweinfurt is not only a reason for celebration for the graduates, but also a step towards strengthening the nursing profession in the region. The combination of practical training and recognition of graduates' achievements is a positive signal for the future of the nursing profession.

This fresh staffing level in nursing shows that the region is ready to aggressively meet the challenges of the shortage of skilled workers. Ultimately, it is up to society to give this important professional field the attention and appreciation it deserves.
