Memorial for Laura Dahlmeier: Partenkirchen honors biathlon icon!
Last weekend was marked by an emotional event in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. A temporary memorial for the deceased biathlon icon was opened in the spa park on August 10, 2025 Laura Dahlmeier furnished. This place not only commemorates her sporting successes, but also offers people the opportunity to say goodbye to the athlete, who was celebrated as a hero in her hometown.
The memorial was created in just two days by numerous dedicated craftsmen in close coordination with Laura Dahlmeier's family. The memorial's elements include a photograph in an elegant iron frame, an arrangement of wildflowers, several candles, an impressive local stone and a small plaque with memories. Mayor Elisabeth Koch (CSU) emphasized that the quick and collaborative implementation is a sign of cohesion in the community.
A new name for the spa park
The city also plans to rename the spa park “Laura Dahlmeier Park” in the future. The application for the renaming will be presented to the local council next September. Since the spa park does not yet have a specific name, the renaming should be relatively unproblematic. In addition, plans are already in the works for a permanent monument with a sculpture in honor of Laura Dahlmeier, which will give the park additional splendor.
Dahlmeier, who died in a tragic mountain accident at the age of just 31, left a remarkable mark on the biathlon world. Her successes and tireless commitment to sport make her an iconic figure not only in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but also in German biathlon history. Your home community wants to honor this value and show all future generations how outstanding their achievements were.
Mourning and sympathy in the community
As part of the funeral ceremonies, a condolence book was set up in the St. Martin Catholic Church in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where people can record their thoughts and memories of the exceptional athlete. These messages are collected by the community and given to the family, which is another step in the process of grieving together. At the same time, there is an opportunity for reflection with flowers and candles at the temporary memorial site in the spa park.
The sport of biathlon has a long tradition in Ruhpolding and the surrounding area, which is characterized by numerous competitions and events that have shaped the region. Although it was initially more difficult to gain public interest in biathlon compared to other Nordic disciplines, athletes like Laura Dahlmeier and their countless achievements made the sport accessible to the masses. Biathlon information documents the development and rise of sport in Germany since its beginnings in the 1960s.
The memorial and the planned renaming are the expression of a deep connection to someone who has left a lasting impression with her talent, her passion and her unceasing commitment. The “Laura Dahlmeier Park” should not only be a place of remembrance, but also a place for everyone who shares the love of sport and wants to remember the values that Laura embodied.
