Dramatic mountain rescue operation: Two climbers in the Zugspitz-Not!

On Pentecost Sunday, June 11, 2025, the mountain rescue services around the Zugspitze were challenged by two missions that proved to be true challenges. Five climbers made their way towards the summit on the Eibsee, but ignored a block and chose the Bayernsteig and the via ferrata "stopping puller" for their ascent. As Merkur soon separated in the difficult area.

The 34-year-old mountaineer from Rhineland-Palatinate remained on the last ridge, while the other four continued the adventure. But the team did not reach the Zugspitze and started relegation. Here they separated again. The 34-year-old gets lost and finds himself a little later on an overhang over 60 meters high without a cell phone. His screams of help initially remained unheard of until two other hikers became aware of him and started the rescue chain.

rescue operation at night

In the meantime, his 39-year-old company managed to get help by phone. He was also in an emergency and was saved with a helicopter by the mountain residents from Ehrwald around 11:30 p.m. According to Br , however, the 34-year-old had to be rescued in other ways, since a helicopter recovery was not possible at night.

The emergency services arrived at the location of the 34-year-old around 3 a.m. after they had worked steeply with ropes and drilling hooks. The rescuers were finally successful at 4:30 a.m., then the elaborate use ended at 7 a.m. The good news: the 34-year-old was very cool, but unharmed. However, both climbers were insufficiently equipped and must now expect the costs for the rescue operation.

further missions in the area

Saturday was no less eventful for the rescue workers. The mountain rescuers of Grainau in the Höllentalklamm had to move out to a rockfall where a person injured their foot. The Garmisch-Partenkirchner mountain rescuers were also active in the Partnachklamm when a guest had to be cared for with a laceration on the head and exhausted hikers from the south end of the gorge were saved, since this area is closed at night. On Friday, a mountaineer also needed the help of a helicopter due to strong circulatory problems.

These incidents show how important it is to adhere to restrictions and to go into the mountains well prepared. Wherever things go high, the best mountain fans should always put the necessary knowledge and the right equipment aside.
