30 years of Hainberg: nature reserve celebrates its diversity and history
in the heart of northern Bavaria, between Fürth and Nuremberg, the Hainberg nature reserve is celebrating its 30th birthday this year. This unique area, which was once used militarily, has developed into a retreat for endangered animal and plant species. According to MarktsPiegel the history of the Hainberg began in the Thirty Years' War when it was part of Wallenstein's camp. The sandy and nutrient -poor floors made the area unattractive for agriculture, which made it ideally appear for military purposes.
From 1898 the area was used by the Royal Bavarian Army and later by the US Army and the Bundeswehr. It was only in 1995 that the Hainberg received the status of a nature reserve. Today it is the largest coherent sand -pantied grass area area in northern Bavaria and offers habitat for rare and endangered species such as the sand grass clove, the Heidelerche and the blue -winged winged wing. The ecological diversity is highlighted by various landscape elements: dunes, light oak and pine forests as well as the natural stream of the Asbach shape the area, as also describes the Bergwaldprojekt
care and protection of nature
In the Hainberg, sheep are used to maintain the landscape and prevent wild growth. Invasive types such as the late flowering grape cherry must also be removed regularly. Volunteers of the mountain forest project do valuable work here by fitting trees and bushes to maintain the open landscape and to support threatened species. The maintenance work aims to promote a resilient ecosystem and at the same time protect the endangered species. However, the work can be changed at short notice due to the weather.
In order to ensure the protection of this valuable landscape, the nature reserve is divided into different zones. In the core zone, leaving the paths is prohibited at all times, while in the breeding protection zone from April 1 to June 30, there is a ban to leave the paths. In addition, dogs have to be led on a leash throughout the area. These measures are necessary to protect the sensitive habitats and to maintain biodiversity.
