Successful amphibian protection campaign: 4,130 animals saved!
In the Fürstenfeldbruck district, this amphibian season can be considered a complete success. Voluntary helpers from the State Association for Bird and Nature Conservation (LBV) have worn 4130 frogs, toads and newts to their spawning waters this year. This reports the Süddeutsche Zeitung .
A reason for this gratifying increase could be the implementation of special protective measures. In Poigern, a district of the municipality of Egenhofen, with 1250 animals from six species, the best result has been achieved since 2015.
The renovation measures carried out on the fence and in the spawning waters include the removal of strong growth, the introduction of area home plants and the creation of a floating dump as an additional spawning waters. This work was carried out in close cooperation with the waste management company (AWB) Fürstenfeldbruck as well as a landscape architect and a landscape care company.
successful species protection measures
Simon Weigl, the head of branch and species protection expert of the LBV, refers to Poigern as a prime example of successful species protection measures. Although the spring was rather dry, the water level in the waters remained high enough, so that further processing of the bank strips is not necessary in the coming years.
The goal of the LBV to count a total of thousands of animals was even exceeded with 498 grass frogs and 410 earth toads. Pond molke (282 copies) and pond frogs (88 copies) were also strongly represented, while four deciduous frogs, a particularly endangered type of amphibian, were spotted as "faders".
From mid -February to the beginning of May, over 40 volunteers invested more than 500 hours to control the almost two kilometers long fences every day and to carry a total of 4130 animals across the street. Most rescued species were the toads with 3100 copies. These gratifying counts show that the amphibian stocks gradually recover after two difficult years (2023 and 2024).
Important data for protection
The counts on the fences also help to collect important data for future protective measures. In addition, interested citizens are cordially invited to report to Fuerstenfeldbruck@lbv.de for the coming season 2026. A perfect way for everyone who wants to get involved in species protection.
according to the BUND NATURGENZUNG The design of ponds is crucial for the success of the amphibian population. There should be a close coordination between pond managers and the respective types of amphibian. Each pond system brings its own challenges, which is why specialist advice can be used.
Special attention should be paid to maintaining the ponds. Quiet zones in the water and on the bank, as undisturbed as possible bank areas as well as the promotion of underwater vegetation are essential points that enrich both fish and amphibian habitats.
The Fauna coordination office of the Nature Conservation Foundation also addresses the great challenges in front of which amphibian species are facing. Environmental damage, climate change and urban development bring these animal groups strongly into trouble. It is therefore necessary to implement suitable protective measures to ensure the long-term preservation of these species.
The Nature Conservation provides comprehensive information and support in the implementation of species protection projects.
