Fast internet for 330 households: groundbreaking in Grafenau!

Grafenau, Deutschland - In Grafenau something happens: the fiber optic expansion continues to absorb! The city had already advertised a funding project for fast internet in 2017, but there was not a single offer at the time, which made it difficult to start the project. Today, on June 30, 2025, the groundbreaking ceremony in Schlageröd has now been celebrated, an important step for the digital future of the region. Mayor Alexander Mayer and broadband sponsor Christian Kritzenberger met with representatives of the planning company, the construction company Bachl and Telekom on site and thus gave the project the official starting shot. The new project enables access to fast internet for another 330 households in Grafenau. This is not only important for the citizens there, but also an important step towards digitization, as it is sought by the Federal Government. The goal is clear: Germany should be equipped with fiber optic networks by 2030, whereby the main responsibility lies with the telecommunications companies (BMV) .

The way to this point was not easy. After a restart of the selection process on June 13, 2021, two offers were submitted for award from July 26, 2021. The surcharge finally fell to Telekom Deutschland GmbH on September 14, 2021. Since then it has been going on: On October 25, 2021, the funding application was submitted and further grant notices from the federal government and the Free State of Bavaria were granted in May 2022 (Grafenau city information) .

The contracts were then signed on August 31, 2022. Telekom plans to start construction work in spring 2024, which should be completed by August 2026. The completion of the districts of Bärnstein, Grafenhütt, Elsenthal, Jägerreith and Gehmannsberg is planned for October 2024.

The funding applications are assessed based on a criteria catalog, with areas with the greatest catching up to do.
