Especially during menopause, many women are faced with the challenge of maintaining their weight or even losing weight. Often one is faced with weight gain, which can be caused by hormonal changes during this phase of life. As the ovaries reduce production of estrogen and progesterone, other hormones that affect appetite increase. According to reports from NDR, it is not uncommon for women to have difficulty regulating their weight during menopause. Falling estrogen levels can lead to water retention and an increase in appetite, adding to the challenge.
Causes of weight gain
Weight gain during menopause is a serious problem for many women. In Germany, unfortunately, 51% of women between the ages of 45 and 64 are overweight or obese. The main causes for this are decreasing energy consumption and decreasing hormone production in the ovaries. Hormones play a crucial role because, among other things, a lack of estrogen leads to increased accumulation of visceral fat, which can endanger health.

- Stimmungsschwankungen
- Muskelschmerzen
- Depressionen
- Gelenkschmerzen
These symptoms can be made even worse by being overweight. Experts recommend a healthy diet as the most effective approach to weight management, favoring fresh foods such as vegetables and high-quality fats. Processed food, sugar and alcohol should be avoided if possible. A food diary can help you better reflect on your eating habits and avoid food cravings.
Find new ways
Another important point is physical activity. Strength training is essential for maintaining muscle mass and can counteract the natural loss of muscle mass during menopause. It also reduces the risk of osteoporosis. It is advisable to seek advice from a doctor before starting strength training and to plan sufficient recovery periods.
Women can do even more for themselves: For example, hula hooping can not only be fun, but can also tighten the skin and support the metabolism. The lecture on December 3rd promises many such valuable tips and tricks that can help overcome the challenges of menopause and increase well-being.
Information about women's health and other events can be found on the website of the Bavarian Ministry of Health as well as in the reports from NDR and DocCheck, which provide comprehensive information about the connections between hormones and weight gain during menopause.
